Fishing conditions on the mainstem Umpqua are looking good this week. Chinook fishing has been picking up with a rise in temperature and anglers seem to be catching a few. Summer steelhead may start poking in the lower river but are likely still a ways out.
Spring Chinook runs until June 30. Wild spring Chinook may be harvested this year with a bag limit of 1 per day and 5 total from the mainstem Umpqua. This is in aggregate with the North Umpqua limit of wild Chinook of ten total Chinook per season. Anglers may still retain two adults per day, but only one may be wild (unclipped).
UMPQUA RIVER, NORTH:
Chinook are finally moving up the North Umpqua. However, the water is still fairly cold. We have had confirmed reports of a few Chinook being caught in the North Umpqua, and Chinook have been spotted crossing Winchester Dam. River conditions look good for fishing the North Umpqua this week.
UMPQUA RIVER, SOUTH:
The South Umpqua is closed annually from May 1 through the Friday before Memorial Day to protect migrating fish. This year the South will reopen May 22.
