Slow, but anglers are picking up a few Chinook in the estuary. During the summer, Chinook will sporadically move into the estuary to feed on bait fish so anglers will want to get the most recent reports to figure out if conditions are right. August is pretty slow as water temperatures in the lower river are pretty warm and fish mainly feed at dusk and dawn. The best time to fish is early morning when the sun is off the water and water temperatures are the coolest.
Anglers wanting to do a little exploring, this is the time of year to hike into the upper Chetco or some of the bigger tributaries in search of cutthroat.
